I meet Will Best on a quiet and bleak afternoon in Chotto Matte, a decadent Japanese restaurant based in Soho. Though the weather is bleak, Will is far from it. He is stood towering above us leant against a large glass window moving naturally to the clicks of the camera. He’s good looking, charismatic and charming.

Will is a presenter and entrepreneur who is passionate about comedy, television, culture and music. Will has presented a wide range of shows including ’The Gleeky’, ’Got to Dance’ ’The Crush’ while also presenting Channel 4 cult show ‘T4’. More recently Will has been filming a contagious new show ’Dance, Dance, Dance’ a celebrity dance show with a twist.

So Will, your new show ’Dance,Dance,Dance’ is currently on ITV, can you tell us more about it ?

It’s a fantastic new dance show where the selected celebrity couples are given the task of recreating iconic music video dance routines. All of the celebrities chosen aren’t well-trained dancers however they have a passion for dance and performance. All of the judges are well known choreographers and the soundtracks used are awesome! I had an amazing time filming and was very impressed by the hard work that went into the show.

How did you get into TV presenting?

I didn’t originally go into presenting. I worked in Manchester as an accounts manager for an advertising firm. I enjoyed it, however it wasn’t my passion. I also knew I wanted to move to London. I love music and comedy but I didn’t know how to combine the two into a career. I wasn’t the world’s best DJ and I’m not a comedian. So I realised presenting shows centered around these subject matters would be a dream job! ’T4’ was exactly the type of show I wanted to present for and I can’t believe I am fortunate enough now to have accomplished that dream. I quit my job, moved to London and gave myself a year to try my luck at what I wanted to pursue. I got talking about my career plan to a friend at a party, who knew someone who needed a presenter for an educational video. I did the video and from then began filming various material to build a showreel. I did everything I could possibly do during this time to help start my career. I sent my showreel to agents and eventually got signed! I landed my first job with ’MTV Viva’.

What do you think makes a good presenter?

I honestly don’t know how to answer that question, I personally don’t like to re-watch my material. However I think a good presenter is someone natural with a good sense of humour. Someone who is down to earth, humble and relatable to an audience.

What’s a typical day in the life of Will Best?

A typical day in my life I would have to say is chaotic, but in the best way possible! I usually start my mornings doing voice overs. Sometimes I have to take flights during the week to places such as Amsterdam for example to continue or begin working on new projects. My daily life is definitely not 9-5, but that’s why it’s so exciting! I’m currently finishing a new show called ’The Art Show’, as well as working on another show called ’Troll Station’. I also have projects going on with some friends such as a production company and being involved with a club night. As I’m a huge fan of comedy, I love to write my own material and enjoy creating sketches.

You worked on ’Sex on Trial’ a show that discussed sexual abuse. The show had a controversial response, what was it like being part of this project ?

I think it was the most far-fetched thing I’ve ever done in my career. We worked in a country house in a very remote area. We showed a fictional and dramatised video centered on sexual abuse to a group of young people. We then debated if what we had seen had constituted as rape. We had a lawyer come in and talk to the children as well as rape victims. The kids were amazing, they were so honest and sensitive to the issue. They had an incredibly mature attitude towards sex. I’m proud to be part of such a knowledgeable generation. I believe also only one critic gave it a ’controversial response’, the other reviews were very positive.

Where do you see yourself in ten years time?

I would like to write more comedy, and maybe do more acting. I want to be doing similar stuff that I’m doing now just taking it further. Hosting my own specialist music show, would be great as well!

Tell us something unusual about yourself?

When I was younger I was always fleeting between professions, I remember wanting to be a pilot in the 1950’s as well as a farmer or vet. I also used to dress up a lot, my favourite was dressing up as what I like to call a ’washer woman’. That consisted of wearing gypsy skirts, baggy blouses and running around with my sisters. When I wasn’t playing with them, I was getting muddy and scampering around.

If you could have dinner with anyone who would it be?

My aunt, she died a few years ago, she was the first person who told me to go to TV. When I landed my first job she was the first person I told!
