Aston Merrygold kickstarted 2017 with a bang by releasing his flawless new track ’One Night in Paris’. The song has been described as ’fun, sexy and different to anything he has released so far’. ’Get Stupid’ was Aston’s debut solo track, after working with pop sensation ’JLS’.

The track gained huge international success, and topped radio airplay charts throughout Europe. To promote the start of his career as a solo artist, Aston began a colossal promo tour including a show-stopping performance on ’The Late Late Show with James Corden’. His new music comes from his childhood influencers Micheal Jackson, James Brown, Usher and Justin Timberlake. Alongside performing huge international shows Aston has also played Wireless Festival and toured with the incredible Jason Derulo.

We head to The Arch Climbing Wall in Bermondsey to chat about his EP ’Precious’ plus his sold out UK tour kicking off at the 02 Academy Islington on this Friday May 5th.

What has it been like beginning your career as a solo artist?

It has felt like a very natural and smooth transition for me, being part of JLS definitely helped me gain confidence musically. I have enjoyed the success my solo career has brought me so far, and have been lucky to play at some amazing venues.

Tell us more about the release of your new EP ’Precious’?

Shy Karter originally wrote the song for his wife, which he performed  at their wedding. Shy wanted to keep hold of the song, but during one of our writing sessions he entrusted me with ’Precious’. It was a very proud moment for me, as I felt honoured he asked me to sing something so personal to him.The EP as a whole represents a collection of songs that are meaningful, profound and the lyrics represent different journeys.

What was the process of filming  the music video for ’Precious’ like?

The director really involved me in the process of developing the video. I had a large amount of creative input as an artist which was fantastic as it really brought the vision for the song to life. It was beautiful, we shot the video in California- it was a very easy shoot the weather was great and it was a very relaxed atmosphere!

Where did you grow up and was music something you always wanted to pursue?

I grew up in Peterborough, just outside of London. Growing up I was always interested in sport. Initially I wanted to be a football player however, in my teenage years I began to study performance and music. This was the turning point for me. After school I worked for a kids TV channel and began auditioning for various acting and music jobs. Through auditioning I met the other members of JLS and we formed the group and successfully made it through to the X Factor.

What was it like filming with James Cordon on ’The Late-Late show’?

It was a mixture of nerves and excitement, but James Cordon is as amazing as he is on camera in real life. It was an absolute privilege to perform my single ’Get Stupid’ on the show. I felt that the audience were very welcoming and embraced the music wonderfully. ’Get Stupid’ has received a lot of appreciation and love from my fans- and I hope my songs continue to receive support.

What artists inspire your music?

Micheal Jackson, James Brown, Usher, Chris Brown and Justin Timberlake. All of these musicians put their blood, sweat and tears into their music.

What advice would you give to someone looking to pursue a career in the music industry?

I think our generation is very lucky as the internet is a fantastic way to promote yourself as an artist, as an emerging talent you should use the internet as much as you can to your advantage!

How do you begin the process of writing a song?

For me its a very spontaneous process! I will come into the studio without an idea in mind and one will form through discussing and listening to sounds and  then a song will naturally develop.

What is the difference between playing at festivals and big arenas?

I think both experiences are very exhilarating, when you are playing at festivals you are amongst other creators and your feeding of the energy of the audience so its an amazing feeling! Playing at big arenas to me personally is a slightly more relaxed atmosphere, because you know everyone there has come to see you perform and appreciate what you do!

What is something unusual about you, that people don’t know?

I am a killer chef! I honestly love cooking, and preparing food from different nationalities!
